Bowman Participates in Workshop on Constructing Civic Society at the Inter-American Development Bank

Kirk Bowman, professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Institute of Technology, participated in a workshop on Constructing Civic Society in the Americas at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, D.C., on November 2, 2017.

Also participating was Sebastião Oliveira, founder of the Miratus Badminton Association in the favela of Chacrinha in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The IDB Group promotes sustainable development by supporting states and by working with governments, private sector, and civil society in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Oliveira is featured in the award winning documentary film Bad and the Birdieman, produced by Kirk Bowman, Jon Wilcox, Katia Lund, and Luis Lomenha Bowman’s research on development emphasizes locally originated innovation such as that of Oliveira. In the film, the directors set out to help the youth in the community who were mired in crime and drugs.

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs is part of the Georgia Tech Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
