Nunn Releases Statement Applauding P5 Commitment to Avoiding Nuclear War

Posted January 14, 2022

Former Senator Sam Nunn, namesake of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, released a statement with former Secretary of Energy Ernest J. Moniz. The pair, writing in their positions as co-chairs of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, commended the leaders of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States for recently committing to preventing nuclear war and arms races. Together, those five countries, sometimes referred to as the P5, make up the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Nunn and Moniz highlight that this is the first time the entire P5 have together affirmed the need to prevent nuclear war. They then go on to outline concrete steps that world leaders can take to ensure their commitment to doing so.
