Steven Schrage

Dr. Steven P. Schrage has experience across academic and policy roles. He served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and oversaw more than $2 billion in global aid and over two thousand personnel. After 9/11, he was selected as Co-Chair of the G8’s Crime and Terrorism Group representing the White House, where he previously was a senior executive official covering international trade. Dr. Schrage has Congressional experience--including as a Senate Chief of Staff and foreign policy counsel, as the Ways and Means Committee International Trade Counsel, and on the policy team of the Speaker of the House--and was the Scholl Chair in International Business at DC’s Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). In addition, he served in full-time policy roles on the headquarters teams of several major presidential campaigns and for multiple White House transition teams overseeing Cabinet-level offices. His foreign policy analysis has appeared in U.S. and international media including NBC’s Nightly News, CNN, The New York Times, Fox News, The Washington Post, and the BBC.

Dr. Schrage earned a PhD from the University of Cambridge with support from the Atlantic Fund Studentship (scholarship), and received other honors and awards in prior academic work at Duke University, The University of Michigan Law School, and Harvard, where he earned distinction on his general qualifying exam and highest marks in all seminars during earlier doctoral studies. He later returned to Harvard as an Institute of Politics Fellow, where Dr. Schrage began researching the topic of his book--how largely unexplored U.S. presidential candidate decisions on personnel, processes, and foreign policy can reshape International Relations, Grand Strategy, and global history.
