1. What do you do?
As a community engagement specialist at the Community College of Philadelphia, I manage community service programs and create opportunities for students to explore their interests outside a classroom context through volunteerism.
In particular, I oversee the College’s nonpartisan democratic engagement program, #CCPVotes, and the Adopt-A-School Program, which places students in high-need K-12 schools in the School District of Philadelphia to work as tutors and classroom assistants.
2. What’s the coolest part of your job?
I get paid to regularly volunteer and give back to my community, which I’ll always think is the coolest. As someone who has always been interested in government, I’ve also enjoyed meeting with elected officials and traveling to Washington, D.C., to represent the college at places like the Department of Education.
3. Why are you passionate about it?
I’ve always believed my purpose is to serve and lift up others. While I get to serve my community every day for my job, I am especially passionate about building relationships with students and investing in the next generation of leaders. It’s a privilege to be a part of someone’s journey as they grow and develop as a person.
4. Which skills from your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?
Getting my degree at a technology-driven research institution shaped me in multiple significant ways. I was challenged to think critically in my courses and, as a result, became a clearer and sharper thinker and communicator, which has been a huge asset in my career.
5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?
Say ‘yes’ to the next right thing for you, and don’t be afraid to do things differently from your peers. I’ve learned you do not always have to know exactly where you will end up, but if you keep saying ‘yes’ to what you’re passionate about and new opportunities to grow, you’ll end up where you’re meant to be.
