Nunn School Renews Navy Fellowship Program Through 2025

Posted May 25, 2022

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs recently renewed its partnership with the U.S. Navy for a Federal Executive Fellow to be placed annually at Georgia Tech through the 2024–2025 academic year.

The partnership, which began in 2019, is led at Georgia Tech by Nunn School Associate Professor Margaret E. Kosal. The Federal Executive Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for Naval officers between the ranks of lieutenant commander and captain to pursue independent research at Georgia Tech, in addition to access to workshops and seminars on campus.

“The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs is an ideal place for a Navy Fellow because of the deep and broad expertise within the School on topics of strategic importance to the Navy, such as Asian politics, proliferation, space policy, and science and technology in international affairs,” Kosal said.

The Navy Fellows audit classes in topics such as international security, international relations theory, qualitative research methods, modeling, and elective courses related to their research.

“Georgia Tech and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs provide an amazing variety of opportunities for a Navy Fellow, academically, professionally, and personally,” said Capt. Tom Petersen, the 2021–2022 Navy Fellow. “I believe the diverse student body and focus on STEM fields at Tech make it the perfect institution to help develop professional officers within the community of the Navy’s information warfare enterprise. This is an institution that truly values our nation’s military and contributes every day to advance our nation’s national security goals.”

This continuing partnership with the Navy builds on existing military fellowships on campus. The U.S. Army Fellowship started at Georgia Tech in 2013, followed by the U.S. Air Force Fellowship in 2017.

Ten other institutions will host Navy Fellows for the upcoming academic years, including Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Atlantic Council.

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs is a unit of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
