Deciphering Putin's Red Lines
What are Putin's red-lines in this war of choice against Ukraine? Does he have "red lines"? Are we on the brink of nuclear war?
These questions have been surprisingly front and center with the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine since late February 2022. Almost from the get-go of the war, the Kremlin began to issue lines in the sand that Ukraine and the West have repeatedly pressed, if not transgressed. Some have concluded, therefore, that Putin's threats are hollow, while others caution against challenging the Kremlin out of concerns about risking nuclear escalation.
To help parse our understanding of red-lines in crisis bargaining and the link to the Kremlin's "ways of war, we are proud to host a panel discussion by three distinguished scholars:
- Dan Altman, Assistant Professor, Political Science, Georgia State University
- Mikhail Troitskiy, Professor of Practice in Russian Studies, Department of Political Science, University of Wisconsin
- Adam N. Stulberg, Nunn Professor and Chair, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs
Gen. (ret.) Philip Breedlove, Distinguished Professor of the Practice at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs will offer commentary.
The panel is chaired and moderated by Jenna Jordan, associate professor and associate chair, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.
