Strategic Energy Institute

Funding is available through the Strategic Energy Institute to support research and outreach activities that promote thought leadership on energy issues. Proposals that may be considered include activities that range from one day up to two years and from a few hundred dollars up to a maximum of $40,000 per year (direct costs and no tuition charged). Second-year funding for any two-year proposals are influenced by the efforts of the principal investigator to engage external resources by the end of the first year.

This Strategic Energy Institute funding program solicits thought leadership planning and/or convening proposals with a particular emphasis on activities where external funding is difficult to obtain, yet that are important in terms of promoting one of the following three SEI goals:

  1. Developing and nurturing the energy research community across the campus and in the state
  2. Growing the resource base for Georgia Tech energy research
  3. Growing the thought leadership projected by Georgia Tech

For example, we want to facilitate planning activities that define frameworks, develop roadmaps, and convene thought-leaders around complex energy issues. Proposals that link up groups across different colleges and campus units such as GTRI and EII are highly encouraged, particularly those that integrate technical discipline expertise with system analyses or economics/policy/business aspects.

Thought leadership Proposals submitted under this program can span activities ranging from a few hundred dollars up to a maximum of $5,000 and can span time ranges from one day up to one year.

Activities contemplated under this RFP are not limited to, but could include:

  • Pre-planning activities or team development for integrated techno-economic studies that frame issues and define frameworks for thinking through complex, integrated energy problems.

  • Financial and organizational support for internal workshops to organize ourselves internally, either toward some anticipated opportunity or to help frame and define an external opportunity.

  • Financial and organizational support for external workshops to develop consensus or recommendations around some energy issue.

  • Financial support for pulling together proposals in response to large external solicitations.

This list is certainly not comprehensive and we look forward to the novel and thought provoking ideas which will come out of the proposed planning activities. Please note that this RFP is NOT soliciting technical research proposals. Questions may be directed to Mary Hallisey at mhallisey@gatech.edu.

GTRI Independent Research and Development (IRAD)

The purpose of GTRI’s IRAD investments is to develop and advance research that addresses national security and global challenges. These ventures extend GTRI’s research base, sustain its competitive position in critical research areas, foster exploration and innovation in new technical areas, and accelerate the organization’s entry into areas of high interest to sponsors. GTRI invests its IRAD funds through three main portfolios of research projects: strategic initiatives, tactical/lab discretionary initiatives, and Hives initiatives. Strategic initiatives develop significant capabilities in areas of national security and global importance. They substantially advance GTRI’s existing research strengths, and can be bold forays into somewhat uncharted territory for which GTRI has the technical acumen. Tactical and lab-discretionary initiatives are funded in response to known sponsor interests, to address technology gaps, and stay ahead of potential opportunities. They are more high-risk/high-payoff projects, and may be quick-reaction or purely exploratory. Hives initiatives explore the disruption created by the convergence of commodity technologies with global trends. They explore the co-evolution of technology with concept of operations (CONOPS), and they anticipate the growth of new security challenges arising from ambiguous warfare.

The Atlanta Global Research and Education Collaborative (AGREC)

A new and exciting initiative, The Atlanta Global Research and Education Collaborative (AGREC) has funding available through this new collective.

Housed within the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC), AGREC is comprised of five universities:

  • AGSC, a partnership of Georgia Tech and Georgia State University

  • Emory University’s Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives

  • Agnes Scott College’s SUMMIT Center for Global Learning and Leadership Development

  • Spelman College’s Gordon Zeto Center for Global Education

AGREC seeks to build and strengthen collaborative networks of multi-institutional scholars and practitioners to support global research and education initiatives in the Greater Atlanta region.

Call for proposals: Connecting globally while grounded at home (2020-2021)

Due: October 10, 2020

AGREC invites scholars to submit collaborative projects across disciplines, institutions, and universities that address a need in our global and local communities. This call aims to address topics with a global connection while being grounded locally. Scholars and practitioners may examine a local and global problem in the form of research, workshop, forum, or suggest another approach by collaborating with an organization in Atlanta or a population group that has a global dimension.

Preference will be given to innovative, transformative collaborative research and education projects in global engagement with significant emphasis on their potential to develop new and strategic sustainable relationships among partners (e.g. universities, companies, NGOs, community organizations) and their impact on Atlanta communities.
